Hacking Go
October 31st 2007

Posted under technology

Have you ever played Go? It is a boardgame composed of a 19 x 19 grid and black and white stones. Two players take turns placing stones on intersections with a goal to capture as much territory as possible. Confused? Yeah, so was I when I first tried playing it.

I first got interested in Go when I was reading a manga called Hikaru No Go. It made the game seem so interesting and complicated. It was hard not to go research about it and figure out how it played. Since then, I have been playing on and off, but I greatly enjoy the game. I would not say that I am a very good player, but I do know how to play. In reality, I really only have one friend whom I play against (and whom I demand a rematch!) and he tends to kick my ass. Nonetheless, I really enjoy the challenge the game brings compared to other boardgames which slide closer to luck or chance.

If I were to compare Go to another board game, it would be Chess. Both are games of skill, and the only luck is who gets to go first. They both involve deep logic and thinking ahead. They are also both complicated games to properly code computer AI for. Regarding chess, we have been able to create a machine that could defeat Chess master Garry Kasparov in 1996. When you think of it, that was over ten years ago. Imagine a new super computer with current technology and imagine how powerful the logic could be. Essentially, the computer must be able to see all possible scenarios that can occur and play accordingly. Thus, a faster machine means more possible computations within a reasonable time limit.

Now, Feng-hsiung Hsu, who was the architect and the principal designer of Deep Blue wants to repeat history again, but this time playing Go. While at first glance, it may not seem so complicated, Go is extremely more deep than Chess is. There are an absolute more number of possibilities which makes thinking ahead incredibly more complicated. Yet, even then, he suggests that within ten years, they will have a machine capable of beating the best Go players.

I was always fascinated by computer AI, including the challenges that you tend to come upon. If you are interested in this challenge, I highly reccomend this article. It explains in more detail why Go is such a complicated game to analyze and also the methods they plan on using to code the AI.

Side note: Ramsay… rematch!!

Eurotrip 2007 - Juggling Video
October 22nd 2007

Posted under juggling & travel & video

When I was in Europe, I asked my buddy Nathan to film me playing with my balls (stop thinking dirty!). We did shoots at various locations across Europe, and a total of about ten videos were made. I would have liked to have done more, but we didn’t always have the time, nor memory space/battery power to do it.

Note that I do not show off any cool moves in this video, since well, I’m not that awesome with the cool moves. If you want to see some awesome juggling videos, go check out Jiahui’s site. The idea for this video was not to impress people, but to have a recorded video of places I had visited. I was inspired by www.wherethehellismatt.com, except instead of dancing, I would juggle. I think overall, the video turned out pretty well and the music fits quite nicely.

I’d like to try my hand on more videos like this, except actually take the time to properly set everything beforehand instead of handheld-on-the-fly footage. I should probably learn some more moves as well, so that I don’t bore everybody. Feel free to comment/criticize in the comments section. Thanks!

Wordpress Update
October 14th 2007

Posted under rant

I have spent the last couple of hours trying to upgrade my wordpress engine from 2.0.5 to 2.3, and I am having a lot of trouble. The site looks fine, but I am unable to publish any of my posts. It always switches them back to draft. I also get a lot of “Array” in my empty fields. It is really annoying. I did a google search for it and I have found others with similar problems, but no solutions. Is there anybody who can help me with this issue?

After trying three times with different approaches, I gave up and I will stick to 2.0.5 for now.

Project Gotham Racing 4
October 14th 2007

Posted under games & rant & video

I was browsing the lastest demos available on Xbox Live and I noticed that Project Gotham Racing 4 was available to try out. I’m not a huge fan of racing games (except the Burnout series and Mario Kart), but PGR4 had me interested because it featured tracks situated in Quebec City. Considering that I live not too far from there and have been there several times in the past, I was curious to see if the demo contained that city. To my dismay, it did not, but nonetheless was still quite impressive. All the Playstation 3 owners will probably tell me that the game looks like crap compared to the upcoming Gran Turismo, but that doesn’t bother me. As I previously mentioned, I am not a huge fan of racing games, particularily the more realistic ones.

Anyways, the one thing that I really liked from the demo was the intro video. It features music by Prodigy and showcases the various cities you play in as well as the automobiles and motorcycles. In my opinion, the game looks fantastic and it was still quite fun to play. I don’t think I would purchase this title, but I could see it being a lot of fun for racing fans.

While not as impressive as on the HDTV with surround sound, here’s the intro video for you to enjoy:

When I was in Ireland, I passed by a HMV and I decided to go see if they had in stock a copy of my favourite television series. To my great pleasure, they did indeed hold a copy of the special edition collection of the hit tv series “Spaced”. Although it was a bit pricey (especially after converting the mighty euro to the Canadian dollar), I happily hugged it up to the cashier and passed her my credit card.

When I got home, I popped the first dvd into my region free dvd player and started watching the first episode. I had seen all the episodes before, but now, here they were in all their wonderful glory on my television set. As the first episode ended, the second one commenced all by itself and I ended up watching all seven episodes of season one in a single sitting. The next day I repeated the process with season 2. If anything helped me defeat my jetlag, it was Simon Pegg and Jessica Stevenson and the rest of the awesome cast.

I watched the series with a special subtitle setting which was called Homage-o-Meter. Instead of showing you the usual captions, it only tells you the references to the jokes and stuff they say. You cannot believe how many shows/movies they imitate or rend homage to. There was a lot of love put in this series and it shows.

Even after watching it all this weekend, I am extremely tempted to go back and watch it all over again. The show also hits subjects that have affected me this past year and it has made me appreciate it even more. I realize I am gushing on and on about this 14 episode series, but it really is THAT good.

If you liked “Shaun of the Dead”, or “Hot Fuzz”, you will love this show. They are all directed by Edgar Wright, and all star at least Simon Pegg and Nick Frost. Go and find a copy of this great show and watch it. It is not to be missed.

Back home, Canada
October 6th 2007

Posted under rant & travel

Well after three weeks of cross country traveling on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean, I returned tired and expired yesterday afternoon into the place I call home. It feels good to be back home and in my element. As much as I loved my trip, it is good to be back in my apartment with my bed, and my stuff. Last night I stayed up late to beat jet lag, but it still has some have some of its sleeping powder in my eyes which I will try to get rid of tonight.

We went across 7 different countries. Pardon me if I sound like a rambling man (ooh, I have to listen to that song now… thank you Lemon Jelly), but I feel like writing a small paragraph about each place. If you follow my blog a little, you probably know most of my adventures, but if not, here is a play by play overview of it.. at least of what I remember. Pictures and videos should follow soon.

Ireland:
Here we went to Dublin and Cork where we were introduced to the wonderful world of Rugby. I don’t follow much sports, but my buddy and I, we were enthralled by this sport. Perhaps it was the fact we were with two rugby players and enthusiasts, but we devoured the matches and wanted more. On our second day we found a jersey shop where I bought myself an official Ireland Home rugby jersey. That shirt is beautiful. That night, I wore it proudly in an Irish pub, surrounded by Irish locals, drinking Irish beer, and watching the rugby match in which Ireland won. Now, that is a memory I will keep from Ireland.

Amsterdam, Netherlands:
The crown jewel of my trip. This city is just so beautiful and wonderful, that most words cannot describe it. Perhaps it was the fact that most people downplayed the place before my trip that made me love it even more. Our hostel was situated directly beside a huge park which was absolutely stunning in the morning. The town is easily accessible by foot, metro, bus, tram, and bicycle. In fact, there are so many bicycles, and very little automobiles. There seems to be nearly no pollution and everybody looks in shape. It has the Red Light District which has to be walked through at least once, but it also has stunning architecture and lovely canals. While some areas such as the Red Light are seedy, you just can’t help but be amazed by the pure irony of a lovely swan swimming in the canal that spans that area. I met wonderful people and I really want to go back. The city’s logo is I AMSTERDAM, and after visiting it, I want to be part of that as well.

Germany
We stayed at three main points in Germany. but rented an automobile to get around during the day. We visited Baden-Baden where I found the house where I was raised as a child. The same town also had natural thermal baths and spas which we took advantage of. We also visited Munich where they had this huge party called Oktoberfest (you might have heard of it before). Essentially, it is the biggest beer festival in the world. Tents hold about 5000 people and lots and lots of beer gets consumed. I loved the experience, but I went over my drinking limit, and I crashed and burned. Needless to say, I did not drink beer again after that experience for the rest of my trip. While in Munich, we also took a day to go visit Neuschwanstein, which is something I have been meaning to see for a long time. It is beautiful, yet at the same time, utterly crazy. It took 4 and a half years for wood sculptors to just do the King’s bedroom! Our last stop in Germany was in Cologne. There we saw the gigantic cathedral and then took a car everyday to visit other areas.

France:
We only visited France two days and they were side trips from Baden-Baden in Germany. We stuck to the Alsace region and were charmed by the small villages and friendly people. I also had the best meal from my trip in a small restaurant which was situated up far in the woods. I will have to go back there again. The meal was divine.

Interlaken, Switzerland:
While we did not get great weather for our three days in Switzerland, we still had a lot of beauty to behold. First of all, the water is a clear cold whitish-blue and it looked so fresh. The air felt clean and we had one of the friendliest hotels we’ve ever seen. We did not do much due to the weather, but we still had a good time. I found some Mr. Babache juggling balls for cheap, so they are my souvenir from Switzerland.. oh, and chocolate!

Vienna, Austria:
We did not know what to expect from this city, but we were greatly surprised. The architecture and landmarks just inspire you to sit down and be creative. Poetry, stories, juggling, music, whatever… you just got a gust of inspiration in this city. One place that surprised us was this place called Café Central which had the most delicious coffee and cakes and food. The inside is breathtaking and if it were situated here in North America would cost an arm and a leg. We got to take a lot of night shots in this city and I want to return to it one day.

Luxemburg:
We only visited this city/country for supper and the sake of seeing it. We were surprised by the amount of great views it has to offer. We had a great time using our cameras and I could have spent another day there easily just waling around and snapping pics.

So overall, it was an amazing trip and I will do it again. I’ve crossed the Atlantic Ocean with this voyage and I am hoping that I can do it again, but this time by crossing the Pacific Ocean. Here’s looking forward to Asiatrip 2008 (or 2009)!

Cologne, Germany
October 3rd 2007

Posted under rant & travel

OK, well this is the last leg of the trip. In a couple of days, I will be heading back home to Canada. It was a great trip, but I am starting to feel tired, plus I will be starting a new job on my return, which is adding just a wee bit of stress. I’m playing it day by day.

We landed in Cologne yesterday and the first thing we did was check out the Cathedral here. It is enormous!! I must have taken over 100 pictures of just the building, inside and out. It is very gothic in nature and well, just impressed the heck out of me. After that, we headed off to Luxemburg to have supper there. That country/city is really pretty at night and we took a bunch of night shots. Thank god for GPS systems though, since it is also a confusing city.

Anyways, Eurotrip 2007 is almost over, I need to enjoy these last remaining days!
