Beautiful Montreal!

Here’s a picture of Montreal taken at night from Mont-Royale. I find it came out really nice. I also took pics with my contact ball in the front, but they did not come out as good. Click on the picture for a larger sized version.

My new acrylic
November 26th 2007

Posted under juggling & photography

I took a new pic of myself with my 100mm acrylic ball. I love this ball. It really is a lot easier to contact juggle with a 100mm ball than a 75mm. If you want to try out this cool hobby, I suggest getting a discount 100mm ball or a practice ball which is made of rubber and bounces if you drop it.

I also picked up two 65mm balls (one red, one glow in the dark) for multiball spinning. I have another three clear ones coming in the mail which were backordered. I am looking forward to getting them!

Twisted Animations

Posted under awesome & funny & music & video

This video is a montage of all sorts of animations done by a guy(?) called Cyriak. It is nothing short of awesome. The music goes really well with it and the animations are incredibly unique and well done. Beware that halfway through they start to get really disturbing. Overall it has a very Terry Gilliam feel to it and it is worth going through the whole video. My favourite part is the cat-person skateboarding on a Dachshund. Enjoy!

Cromartie High School

I remember seeing the first episode of Cromartie High a couple of years back and I found it really funny and extremely random. I forgot about it for a while and then got to see the live action movie at Fantasia a couple of years ago. Then I forgot about it.. again. I was browsing a dvd shop downtown and came upon the box set for the first season. I decided to pick it up and I started to watch it today. Why did I wait so long? This show rocks!

It is the first animé I actually prefer to watch with the English dubbing. It has its crazy moments, and most episodes are good. There is no real story, and the episodes are seperated in segments. It reminds me of how Azumanga Daioh (which is another awesome animé) was split up. Anyways, if you get a chance to watch this, it is a lot of fun.

Italian Spiderman and Three Mighty Men
November 18th 2007

This is the “trailer” to the movie “Italian Spiderman”. While it is most definately a spoof, it reminds me greatly of a Turkish movie I have seen called Three Mighty Men, which had a green spiderman as a bad guy… and Captain America teamed up with Santo as the good guys! To be honest, the effects in this movie look better than the Three Mighty Men movie! Enjoy! SPIDER!

Ooh, found a clip from Three Mighty Men!!

Beowulf
November 14th 2007

Posted under awesome & movies & reviews

“Beowulf” is Robert Zemeckis’ new movie which tells the tale of Beowulf and his adventures. It is done in CGI, but uses very lifelike models which resemble greatly the actors providing the voices. The trailer stunned me when I first saw it, but I had my doubts nontheless. Beowulf is a sort of pseudo-sequel to The Polar Express. Naturally, their stories have nothing in common, but they were designed in a very similar fashion. The Polar Express used lifelike models (such as Tom Hanks), but had some problem with keeping the illusion. The way the models walked and moved made it feel like a CGI movie, and never propelled the film to a further reach of our imagination.

I am happy to say that Beowulf fixes that problem. While at certain points you will be taken away and will realize the CGI, most of the time you will be amazed at how these characters talk and move. The animation is nearly spot on and is quite breathtaking. The water effects and fire look stunning and well… everything just looks great! There are some intense scenes, mostly involving fighting and death, and the camera gets the best angles to make it feel cinematical. Grendel is a badass and Beowulf is even more of a badass. The last part of the film was spectacular.

What was really impressive were the human character models. Their faces look realistic the it makes the old look old, and the young look young. There is quite a bit of nudity in the movie, although it is always well hidden. For the ladies, there is as much man flesh (or maybe more) than the buxomed women in the film.

What really was amazing though was the fact that this movie was shown at Imax in 3D. I have seen several Imax 3D films in the past, and this one easily takes the cake. Most 3D movies can make you dizzy, or it simply feels like several layers of 2D images. This movie is breathtaking from beginning to end, and it almost feels wrong to see it otherwise. Simply put, you HAVE to see this movie at Imax in 3D. It will blow you away.

Warning: Do not watch this unrated trailer if you don’t want to ruin anything…

Contact Juggling and School Strikes
November 14th 2007

Posted under juggling & rant

Lately, I have been putting more time and effort in contact juggling. I have met up with some awesome people and we try to meet up every Tuesday to practice. They are all just really great to hang out with and I really appreciate the fact that I have found people who enjoy doing this. We practice in the combat room (think karate and self defense) of a local school, so the mats on the ground offer a very acrylic-safe environment.

I arrived late today and I must say that I was quite surprised with what I saw at the school. I had been warned that there would be a student strike at school and that I may have trouble getting in. I expected to see a line of picketers and nothing more. What I came face to face with was quite a different story. Most of the entrance was barricaded with desks and chairs. Students were everywhere screaming and many had beers and cigarettes in their hands (inside the school). Several wore ski masks, probably to hide their identity. As one person quite properly put it, it looked like anarchy.

I must admit I found the entire situation quite sad. I am all for strikes and for people to voice their opinions, but it just didn’t seem like that was the case tonight. It felt like a handful of students had the right idea in mind, and that the rest were there to get on the ride and go crazy. I saw some people paint the ground outside, and hallways and doors were barricaded here and there. We got kicked out of the combat room because they warned us that they were about to lock the floor down. Some people were agitated and screaming, and others were calm and understanding. It was pretty crazy, yet I walked out of there laughing. Not that I found the scenario funny, but it just made me laugh that I am 100% sure that most kids were there just to party.

It was no longer a strike; it was a huge student party, and you got to cause shit. Why can’t people do this properly, and more civilized? I want these students to have their voices heard, but if they are going to make a huge mess while smoking and drinking alcohol in school, who will take them seriously? I think the following nights (the strike is planned for three days I believe) will pan out in a more civilized matter, but if they keep up with what I saw tonight, I will not be surprised that nothing will come out of it.

Friggan Youtube

Posted under rant & video

It seems that most of the videos below have been removed due to violations of some sort. I’ll try to replace them if I ever find them again… Grrr, I don’t know why they would remove two old Kids in the Hall sketches and an intro to an episode of The Office. I mean, I managed to make some new viewers with that video! Why remove it? I haven’t gone through the rest of the posts to see if I lost some more.

Youtube, you have made me sad.

This is an old Kids in the Hall skit from my childhood.
I’m pinching your face!
They are the Canadian equivalent to Monty Python.
Now I need to find the “How to survive a Grizzly Bear Attack” skit.
