Business Cards - Help me choose
March 23rd 2008

Posted under photography

I was at a Web Conference today sponsored by Yahoo! Québec and Nurun, and I realized that as somebody in the Web Development field, I was missing two critical items. The first is a laptop. I really need to buy a laptop eventually. The other was a business card. I have been contemplating for a while now on making some business cards, but I did not know from what vendor to buy them from. Eventually I decided on moo.com, which offer mini cards which are half the height of normal business cards. They stand out and the picture quality is quite decent. I’ve seen some actual cards printed form there and it does indeed make an impression when they are handed out.

Anyways, I went ahead and worked on 5 different cards. The beauty of moo.com is that in the lot of 100 cards, you could technically make them print out 100 different images. So while I have 5 cards below, if I wanted to, I could get 20 of each. Therefore, I want to know your comments on them. Let me know which ones you prefer, any you hate, changes you would do, etc, etc. Please be serious about your comments though. I realize that they are probably not very suitable for handing out to a business, but I wanted something that would give a lasting impression. They will also be used to hand out to people I may meet and just want to stay in contact. Thanks.

Note that the last card has a vertical orientation for the front. I have placed a border around it to make it more visible on my site, but the actual card will not have a border. I also made two variations of it. Also, the physical back of all the cards will be white with some info such as my name, email and website.

Almond Udders

As long as I can remember, I have been avoiding that white liquid that babies love so much; milk. I know I am lactose intolerant, but I think I am also slightly allergic since my body never got used to it. I never understood why people craved it so much. Is it part of a repressed memory of when we were but young babes drinking from the breast of our mothers? My parents told me I could drink breast milk when I was a baby, but I would never accept cow`s milk. I thought all this time that it was maybe because breast milk did not contain lactose, but after a squick search online, it seems like it does. Perhaps I am not lactose-intolerant as I think I am, and it is in fact an allergy to cow`s milk? Anyways, I have been avoiding the stuff for years without asking myself questions, and I never bothered with soy milk. I enjoy smoothies, but I never put milk in them.. until now!

Vegan Dave introduced me to a new type of milk that is not from any animal, nor from soy. It is in fact derived from almonds! I never knew this stuff existed, and it is not the easiest of product to find. I buy the brand from Blue Diamond called Almond Breeze, and I have used it in a smoothie without any side effects! I bought the vanilla kind, but I plan on getting the original brand and using it in my recipes. I will be unable to compare with real milk to see if there is a huge difference, but from what I read, it should be pretty similar. I don`t plan on changing my habits with this new milk though, and will thus continue to eat my cereal dry and I don`t expect to crave a glass of milk when I am thirsty.

Speaking of cereal, anybody remember Pac Man cereal? That stuff was awesome! It was a crazy sugar overload! They were pretty generous with the marshmallows, and the regular cereal wasn`t bad either. My sister used to screw me over though by pouring herself a bowl of cereal, eating all the marshmallows and putting the real cereal back in to box… before I poured myself a bowl. Check out this commercial from the past which promoted this wacka-wacka breakfast.

Caramelldansen

I dislike addictive internet memes. I don’t hate them to the point where I turn my head in disgust, but they tend to get stuck in your head and never come out. I have seen so many over the past years flowing through the many tubes of the internets and they all seem to stick to the insides of my cranial area for days on end. I’m sure you remember the Hampster Dance, You’re the Man Now Dog!, Numa Numa, and the Star Wars Kid. Those are all memes of some sort.

Yesterday I discovered a new one. It has been out there for quite a while, but it was new to me and is now stuck in my head. I was visiting one of my favourite webcomics, VG Cats, and he had mentioned a bunch of “cute” kirby videos he found online. I was expecting some Smash Brothers Brawl videos, since it is currently all the rage, but instead I was treated to a Kirby-fied version of the Caramelldansen.

Naturally, Youtube had to remove the Kirby video… it was the best of the bunch. It has been replaced by the Smash Brothers version which was previously found lower in the post.

I had never heard that song before, particularily since I don`t listen to that type of music, but I was curious as to where it all came from so I started searching. Continue reading to find out more.

Paranoid Park
March 6th 2008

Posted under movies & rant & video

As mentioned in my previous post, I had won tickets to go see Paranoid Park, the new film by Gus Van Sant. I’ll start by letting you watch the trailer. Go ahead, watch it now. I’ll wait.

That looks kinda cool, right? I mean, it looks tense, and it portrayed a good sense of paranoia in a way, right? Well, if I have one thing to say, it is that the trailer you just watched is awesome. The full picture is probably the worse movie I have ever seen.

I am not sure how to describe Paranoid Park. The trailer essentially told you the entire plot right there. That’s pretty much it. Now imagine it stretched out for over an hour. What better way to lengthen a trailer than to mess around with camera effects and show useless clips! There are so many scenes where it is filmed in extreme slow motion. Then they have videos of skateboarders doing what they do best. Sometimes it is grainy, and sometimes it is in beautiful video.. but in slow motion! Forget the fact that you see the main character skateboard maybe twice in this film; a lot of pointless unknown characters will skateboard instead!

It also likes to repeat scenes. It shows you a scene and you are not sure what just happened, then halfway throughout the movie, they show it again, just now you know what happened prior to getting there. Do you understand why that scene happened? Yes! Do you care? No! The director seems to also have an out-of-focus fetish. Hey, lets make a very tiny depth of field on his nose and lets blur out everything else. We know who it is in the background, but they are all blurry. Most likely it was to show that there is no real communication between the two, but then POOF the character is no longer blurry… so that relationship goes down the toilet.

The music is also very weird and does not seem to fit. At one point, the girlfriend was angry so it was a sombre music, but then he says the right thing to make her happy and they switch to happy circus music!!! HAPPY CIRCUS MUSIC! They played it for 2 seconds then switched back to the sombre music. WHY?! They reused that happy circus music several times, but it never seemed to fit.

There was only one joke that made a couple of people in the audience giggle, and it was predictable from a mile away. The main actor is 15 years old, and his girlfriend is a 13 year old preteen and they have sex. You don’t see anything, but that is just wrong. This entire movie is worng! I’m not correcting that spelling mistake! WORNG!!!

Since I won the tickets from a french newspaper we got treated to the french version. We were desperately hoping for subtitles instead of a french dub, but we were once more dissapointed. The french in this movie is also horrible. It was dubbed in France, which is fine, since I love several French films from that country and I can understand them perfectly. In this movie, they speak French the same way as you would hear it in the street; essentially there are almost as many english words as french words. It just sounded ridiculous, and made me roll my eyes so often that I spent more time looking at the walls on the cinema. No offense to any French people out there; I have nothing against the accent, and it is possible that kids in France actually speak this way, but it was not for me.

I really hate ripping on movies. I love movies and it is very rare when I find one I really disliked. I actually felt like leaving the cinema, but I was hoping for a good ending to make me feel better. I think the director forgot to include one, among many other things.

I find it sad when some of the short films I saw at the Fantasia Event were better in every regard compared to Paranoid Park. Perhaps if it was created as a short film as well, it would have been a much better experience.

To conclude, I want to quote from another film:

Nobody can begin to guess.
There’s a lot of dough in this dough.
The butcher, the baker, the candlestick maker.
Happy pushing… Happy pushing!
The boss says to cover every kindergarten and sandbox.
We’re gonna teach them something about pleasure.

Bang your head until that makes a lick of sense. Now you’re ready for Paranoid Park.

Busy Busy Busy

Right when we get our first glimpse of Spring, Mother Nature dumps us another layer of the snow. Just in case it would not be enough to dampen our spirits, she mixed it with ice pellets as well. Everybody is looking forward to the end of the snow reign. I miss the greenish hues of the grass on the hills. Where are the robins and birdies singing their tunes? Soon… soon.

I have been really busy lately. On Saturday, Montreal was having an all-nighter. Multiple celebrations were being held all throughout the night. My friend Alex and I chose the Fantasia event and we prepared for a mind melting experience. We were treated to multiple shorts, each more twisted than the last, and a blast of animated humour which tickled our funny bones and cleared our senses. We left at 2:45, but those brave enough to continue through the experimental films could have stayed until 5am. One film, lacking any gore or violence was nasty enough to make me and Alex gag. I was impressed!

The next day I was invited to go see Henry Rollins. It was a spoken word show, and boy does he ever speak! He did not pause once or drink any water throughout the three hours. It was really interesting and I’m really happy to have heard what he had to say.

Monday I won tickets to see Ace Frehley in concert. I did not really know who he was, except that he is an original member from Kiss. I invited one of my friends who is a major Kiss fan, and we really enjoyed the show. I didn`t know the songs, but I had never been to this type of show before and it was really interesting. I love the fact that from the balcony, all you could see was a sea of bald spots and comb-overs. I was probably one of the younger people in that crowd.

Yesterday was my weekly contact juggling practice, where, lately I have been practising everything but contact juggling. I got back into it, but I’m thankful I have that weekly practice, since it frees me away from everything else going on in my life.

Tonight I won free passes for a movie called Paranoid Park. Hopefully, that will be quite entertaining.

Thursday I plan on going to the Biodome in Montreal since they are having an event in which you can see the nocturnal life of the animals. It should prove to be very interesting.

Friday I am meeting with friends for some Rock Band action.

Hopefully, come this weekend I will be able to get some sleep. Of course, if the sun comers out and melts the snow away, I will instead take advantage of the situation and go spend it outside.

Busy, busy, busy… :)
