Static Attack
November 25th 2008

Posted under rant

I don’t know why, but I seem super charged with static electricity. If I touch any item made out of metal, I get shocked. This occurs primarily at work, which I assume is due to the carpeting. The worse so far has been my headphones (the rubber wiring is edging away) and the fridge door handle. At least it gives you a jolt and keeps you awake, but still, I fear that if this continues I will become like Elmo Sputterspark

I just updated to version 2.6.3 of Wordpress. It was a lot less complicated than past (unsuccessful) attempts. If you notice anything weird, please let me know in the comments. Thanks!

Slow Month…

Posted under rant & reviews

I know I haven’t been updating much lately, but I have been rather busy in real life. On the digital side, I am currently looking into revamping my website with a total redesign. It is taking slightly longer than I expected, but “real life” has been eating into that time as well. In regards to my last post, I am currently typing this on my new (refurbished) Macbook Pro. It is a very nice machine, but I cannot say that I am ready to fully switch over to Mac from PC. Since I decided to get myself a good machine for multimedia work, I also got myself a nice 24″ Samsung LCD to connect it to. It is so purty! Add a new wireless mouse, and I am all set for innovation and work. Anyways, I’ll update soon enough, but it may be a while since I constantly have the revamp on my mind (among other things).

if you were curious, here are some of the things keeping me busy lately:

Movies:

  • Madagascar 2 - Awesome movie, especially if you loved the first one
  • Quantum of Solace - Meh.. I was dissapointed.. since when did James Bond become Jason Bourne?
  • Role Models - I found this really funny, although it is a plot type that has been used many times before.
  • Max Payne - Ok movie, although slow and long. Feels like the game.
  • CA$H - A french film about pulling heists, similar to Ocean’s Eleven, but not as good
  • Sita Sings the Blues - Awesome animation/musical about the story of Sita in Indian history.
  • The Good, the Bad, the Weird - One of the best Korean movies ever. This movie ROCKED.

TV:

  • Six Feet Under - Recently bought the box set and I am slowly going through it. Quite good!
  • The Office - Is it just me, or is this season slightly subpar compared to others? Although Creed makes an incredible Joker.
  • Dexter - One of the best shows
  • Heroes - Slowly ctaching up to this.. it is not bad, but sometimes feels like it is going too out there
  • Family Guy - I am seriously dissapointed these last few weeks
  • Soul Eater - Awesome new(ish) anime airing in Japan
  • Bleach - They finally got back to the real story arc

Books:

  • First Among Sequels - Finally got the fifth Thursday Next book in paperback!

Games:

  • Fallout 3 - I love this game.

Concerts:

  • Girltalk - The opening acts were terrible (sorry Fern & Dharti), but the main act was a big giant party!

Yeah.. that’s about it for the mini reviews. In other news I need to get back to practicing my juggling and I really need to get back in shape! If this keeps up, the classic nintendo game will be called A Boy and his Mike!

Apple, the fruit of temptation
November 4th 2008

Posted under rant

It started with the iPhone.. a small gadget that fit in my pocket and let me do all sorts of things. It was a good phone, a good music/video player, and a better time-waster. I have so many apps, that I got tempted to design my own. Maybe an app that would have all my bus schedules, without surfing the net? That would be cool.

After checking online, I found that the iPhone SDK is totally free, but only works on a mac. Great.. I don’t own a mac. So, now I am starting to look at macs online. While my pc is due for an upgrade, I don’t want an iMac. My next computer purchase will be a laptop, so naturally the Macbooks caught my eye. I originally wanted a Dell XPS 1330, but it would not let me write iPhone apps, so while it is still an option for a good laptop, I am more interested in the Macbooks.

Recently, Apple announced a new line of Macbooks and Macbook Pros which look absolutely delicious. Since I want to be able to do video editing and multimedia stuff in general, I have always ignored the smaller Macbooks. With this new generation, the 13″ Macbook can be almost as powerful as the lowest Macbook Pro. It is missing the Firewire (meh) and the discrete graphics processor, but is still a contender. The Macbook Pros are as sexy as ever, but in my opinion, only offer subtle changes over the older generation.

Ask anybody (well anybody who does not consider Steve Jobs as their god) and they will tell you that the Macbooks are overpriced. I have always agreed and thus have kept away. With this new line of Macbooks, I don’t find that has changed. What has caught my eye though are the prices of refurbished OLDER generation Macbook Pros. A Macbook Pro with nearly the same specs as the new line will cost me about 500-600$ less. Also, they can come with the matte screen instead of the reflective glossy mirror the new ones (only) sport. (Apple says that to avoid reflection in the sun you should, ahem, tilt your screen to avoid it… good one Apple)

I am seriously tempted in getting one, but I wonder if it is the right choice. If you have a mac, or have advice, please let me know what you think in the comments. I know my iPhone definitely wants me to get it…
